'Heritage Counts 2011' is the tenth annual survey of the state of England’s historic environment. Each year Heritage Counts explores the role of the historic environment in wider social and economic agendas. This year the theme is the historic environment and Big Society.
It is produced on behalf of the Historic Environment Forum.

'Heritage Counts' also provides decision-makers with the data and information they need to make informed choices about the historic environment and highlights any key changes in the sector over the past year. The national report contains information on:
- Heritage assets
- Heritage assets at risk
- Planning consents
- Funding in the historic sector
- Employment and skills
- Economic and social benefits
(participation, volunteering, education, regeneration, community cohesion)

Each year research reports are published to support 'Heritage Counts'. These are also available on the Research Reports page of this website. This year there are three sets of research reports to accompany 'Heritage Counts 2011'.

- Civic Voice – research on the role of civic societies and volunteers in shaping places.
- BritainThinks – Qualitative research on what would get more people involved in ongoing engagement with the historic environment.
Alongside the national report are nine regional reports which provide further detail on the state of the historic environment in each of England’s regions.
